Garrison at a Glance
Location – 6 miles off Hwy 83 – North side of Lake Sakakawea 4 miles from Ft. Stevenson State Park – 45 minutes from Minot and 1 hr. 15 min. from Bismarck, both of which are major cities with international airports.
Good Schools – Elementary school was recently the recipient of Dept. of Ed. “No Child Left Behind Blue Ribbon” award, one of only 3 in ND to be so designated.
Medical Facilities – Hospital recently remodeled and expanded, 24 our emergency service and level 4 trauma unit, ambulance service, two family clinics, a dental clinic and an optometrist clinic, three chiropractors and a massage therapist.
Strong Business District – Agriculture and tourism both provide strong economic bases. For its size, Garrison has one of the most active chamber of commerce organizations in ND. Fifteen to 20 members routinely meet twice a month.
Strong City Council that works well with other community entities. Infrastructure Issues have been addressed in past decade and include, streets, sidewalks, curb and gutter, renovation or demolition of unsightly buildings– Main Street is clean, attractive and inviting – airport that can accommodate small corporate and private aircraft.
Garrison Area Improvement Association – operating since 1991 – board of 9 meets every week – responsible for over $250,000 in loans and grants for area improvements and business enhancements.
Volunteer Fire Department, both urban and rural -- one of the best in the state. Garrison is also the home of the ND Fire Fighter’s Museum and Hall of Fame which is currently renovating a historic building as headquarters for the museum and CVB.
Accommodations for Seniors Citizens – Social groups and organizations, retirement home, nursing center and swing bed facility in the hospital.
Housing – Currently have all levels of housing including senior and low income. The Garrison Housing Authority has just completed a fourplex featuring two and three bedroom apartments. An assisted living project offering 18 units opened its doors in the fall of 2009.
Labor – Labor availability study completed in 2007. Unofficially there is a 19.5% underemployment rate in the surrounding area. We are a service community and have jobs for spouses needing supplemental incomes. Also have frequent need for workers in the medical field and may be recruiting educators in near future due to retirements. Energy development is creating many new jobs in the area.
Active Arts Council - Promotes art and culture and enhances awareness of art for students – Also operates the movie theater on an all volunteer basis.
Abundant Recreational Opportunities – Hunting, fishing, lake activities, golf, many tourist attractions, official Walleye Capital and Christmas Capital of ND, make Garrison a destination for tourism.
Annual Events - Garrison hosts many events and is the envy of small towns all across ND. Major events include the Dickens Village Festival, CANDISC bicycle tour, Skydance Sakakwea and major fishing tournaments.
